marked woman

It is Eid Al Fitr here in the UAE and everywhere you look is a joyous celebration. Aside from trips out of the country, or going to the park for a family picnic, one of the more popular way of celebrating Eid among women (locals and expatriates) is getting a henna tatoo. There are a lot of henna tents right now scattered all over the shopping malls. You can just walk in right there choose your own design and have your hand tattooed.

Henna is the Arabic name of a 10-foot tall bush named Lawsonia iner
mis, and has been used in the Middle East, Indiaa nd North Africa for 9,000 years. Other names include henne, mehndi, Al khanna, Al Henna, Jamaica Mignonette, Egyptian Privet and smooth Lawsoniea. It is mostly found in hot climates. The leaves are picked, dried and crushed into powder and then made into a paste.

Each part of the world has a specific design and belief about henna. In the Middle East and Asia, it is generally brides who are painted. In Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Turkey, henna symbolises good luck. In Morroco, secret designs are passed through generations and painted on the ankles to protect women during pregnancy and birth.
