How Consultants Make a Difference

For all of you who frequent restaurants and understand the need for faster service, this short story is a timeless lesson on how Consultants can make a difference to an organization.

Last week, we took some friends out to a new restaurant and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket. It seemed alittle strange. When another waiter brought our water I noticed he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket.Then, I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets.

When the waiter came back to serve our soup I asked,"Why the spoon?"

"Well", he explained, "the restaurant's owners hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour. If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back tothe kitchen and save 1.5 man-hours per shift."

As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he wasable to replace it with his spare. "I'll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now." I was impressed.

I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter's fly. Looking around, I noticed that all the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So before he walked off, I asked the waiter,

"Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?""Oh, certainly!" Then he lowered his voice. "Not everyone is so observant. That Consulting firm I mentioned also found out that we can save time in the rest-room. By tying this string to the tip of you know what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the rest-room by 76.39 percent".

I asked, "After you get it out, how do you put it back?"

"Well," he whispered, "I don't know about the others, but I use the spoon.

environmentalists hit a speed hump

They may be popular with residents wanting to prevent speeding on their streets, but research has shown that speed humps can be harmful to the environment.

The traffic calming measure, widely used in residential areas can increase fuel consumption by 47 percent on 50km/h roads, a study has found.

The study, carried out by an independent engineer and car tester in the UK, found out that the average car achieves 58.15mpg at a steady speed of 50km/h. But when going over humps, it will reach only 30.85mpg. The results were calculated by averaging the results of two cars.

It also found that cutting the speed limit from 40km/h to 25 km/h pumps up CO2 emissions by 10 percent.

For the nth time, I am suffering from last song syndrome. I am soo smitten by this beautiful song from Tori Amos. I have been listening to it over and over while my little Andre is asleep.

I found a video and lyrics and I am sharing it with everybody. I guess the song is trying to say that to love someone unconditionally does not necessarily mean tying him down. And yeah, i strongly agree that's what love is all about -- giving someone their freedom, their own time to grow and find themselves. It is Eid Al Adha here in the UAE so hubby is on vacation until the 23rd. No need to wake up early so we enjoyed our own sweet time last night and headed to Wafi City. Oh I just could not get enough of their lovely Christmas decorations which incorporated the Chronicles of Narnia. Yep, there was the Ice Queen in her beautiful Ice Castle, there was the giant Christmas tree decked with pretty blue balls and guarded by cuddly polar bears! The annual Gulf Fun Drive is here again. Tomorrow, a convoy of 350 off-road vehicles will be flagged-off slicing through the desert sands of Liwa. For the six-hour drive, here are the dune rules to follow:

1. Do not lose sight of the car ahead of you in order to stay on course.
2. Follow the route notes.
3. Enter all GPS coordinates before you start.
4. Nervous riders may shut their eyes, especially while driving down steep slopes.
5. Don't do stunts such as 'doughnuts' on soft tires.
6. Don't attempt stunts on an incline.
7. When stuck in the sand, listen to the marshals and follow their advice.
8. Remeber, driving on a hot sand causes tyre pressure to go up.
9. If the vehicle is struggling in the softer sand then stop and reduce tyre pressure.
10. The correct tyre pressure is 15 to 16 psi.
11. Do not push the acceleration too much while negotiating slopes. The rear wheels may bounce up and down.
12. Drive in low gear instead of free wheeling on down slopes.
13. Do not touch the brakes, let the engine do the job.
14. Drive straight and not at an angle on slopes.

Hubby has always been a fan of the mighty Lamborghini. When we visited the Motorshow last month, I saw the Lamborghini Gallardo in the flesh but I was not a converted fan because I was all eyes on GM's treasure, the Hoden Efijy. But all this changed last Friday morning when hubby and I lazily cruised the Dubai roads. Driving ahead of us is a black Lambo with pink lights! I was so smitten I kept my eyes on the car and the driver must know we were all drooling because he was going slowly as if savoring every moment he has on the road. We finally caught up with the beauty and I too savored every angle and movement of the car hihi.

As for all the other fans of this hypercar, you have one more thing to rejoice about it because the most exclusive and the most expensive car ever built by Lamborghini, the Reventon has been officially declared the world's prettiest car in a special models category of the "L'Automobile piu Bella Del Mondo" (The World's Most Beautiful Automobile) award.

The judges selected the Reventon for its extreme, consistent, sharp-edged styling inspired by aeronautics, all features that make it a true work of art. The Reventon was presented for the first time at the 2007 Franfurt Auto Show.

Only 20 Reventon's will be made each with a price tag of 1M euros - and they've all been bought. We still have the chance to see it here on the flesh because one buyer comes from Dubai. The remaining cars: 11 go to the US, seven to Europe and one to Japan.

No motor show is complete without Ferrari. And the Italian marque certainly had heads turning in its direction at the Dubai Motor Show when it unveiled its latest offering, the Scuderia. Here is my own snapshot of the speed car.

The Scuderia draws its inspiration from the F430, but is 100kg lighter than its predecessor. The car is powered by a naturally-aspirated V8 engine that churns out 510bhp at a screaming 8,500rpm. It also features Ferrari's latest F1 software, Superfast, which reduces gear change times to just 60 milliseconds.

Expect to see a few of these lightweight superquick Ferraris on our Dubai roads soon.

The Audi Mobile Phone, which is a camera, MP3 Player, GPS system and a car key all rolled into one was unveiled last month at the Tokyo Motor Show. It enables the owner to unlock the car without a key or turn on the sound system or A/C remotely.

The device can also alert car owners in the event of car theft and even transmit a picture of the thief to the phone. The phone teams up with an onboard camera, which snaps pictures when suspecting the entrance of an intruder, and then wirelessly sends the pictures to the phone. Then, acting like a LoJack, it switches on the car´s tracking device following the car´s location.

The interface, a touch-sensitive screen with only four main softkeys (like an iPhone), can recognize Latin and Japanese characters, and can also decipher handwriting. Perhaps the biggest concern about such a high-tech device is getting used to safely using it—or not using it—while driving.

It's show time!! We finally made it to the 9th Middle East International Motor Show over the weekend. There were around 400 displays of the most exotic, speed racers, hybrid, and latest car models from auto makers worldwide. I took lots of pictures of course, so brace yourself for some motor show entries for the next few days because I will share with you what we only see in a car magazine.

Because the show itself was fantastic, I like to start my entry with a blast by showing you the hottest speed car today as it recently raced against a Eurofighter jet. Yes, my dear readers, we saw the Bugatti Veyron right here in the Dubai. Here is my very own snapshot:

In what was possibly the most exciting and ambitious race ever filmed, the presenter of a famous motoring show in the UK pitted the Bugatti Veyron against the Eurofighter Typhoon jet. Television presenter Richard Hammond, drove the 1,001bhp,407km/h Veyron in a one mile race against the hi-tech plane.

His opponent, the RAF's typhoon display pilot, Flight Lieutenant Jim Walls, flew the jet which can produce 18 tonnes of afterburner thrust and has a top speed at least twice the speed of sound.

Veyron gave the Typhoon a tough fight, but eventually lost out to the multi-role fighter plane.

1. Coffee -- According to the National Coffee Association, the average price for brewed coffee is $1.38. There are roughly 260 weekdays per year, so buying one coffee every weekday morning costs almost $360 per year.

2. Cigarettes -- The Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids reports that the average price for a pack of cigarettes in the United States is $4.54. Pack-a-day smokers fork out $1,660 a year. Weekend smoker? Buying a pack once a week adds up, too: $236.

learning from Glorietta horror

Our beloved banana republic was shaken last week because of the Glorietta bombing. While all of us are still recovering from this terrorizing act, I share with you a letter written by one of the victims. It was forwarded to my e-mail and it is pretty long but read worthy especially to all the couples, married or not.

Good day everyone,

I wish I were writing under different circumstances.

I would like to inform you that my wife Leslie Cruz
was part of the casualties in the Glorietta 2 Mall
bombing in Makati City, Philippines. She was supposed
to have a minor out patient surgery at Makati Medical
Center at 230pm.

I had taken a leave from work to accompany her there.
We dropped off our daughter, Amber, at my parents
place in QC to babysit at around 10am. We then
proceeded to Makati and was there at 1230pm. Since she
had been fasting in preparation for her procedure, she
wanted to move around and listen to some music while I
grabbed a bite to eat. We parked at the basement of
Park Square 2, and headed for the Glorietta 2
entrance. We parted at the top of the escalator, she
turned right towards Filbar's while I went left
towards the restaurants. That was the last time I
would see her.

Around 120pm, she had called me so that we can meet at
the Glorietta 2 exit just in time to make her
appointment. As I made my way there from Glorietta 1
through the connecting hallways, and was about to turn
the corner, I heard 2 deep thumps and the shock-wave
from the blast hit me. At that moment my heart dropped
as I knew that the origin of the blast came from the
same place where we were supposed to meet. I tried
getting to where my wife was, but the dust was too
much and it was as if I was staring at a white wall.

I still tried to convince myself that she was able to
make it out, and that after ringing her mobile without
a response only meant that she dropped it in the
confusion. After 6 hours of searching from Makati Med.
to Ospital ng Makati, the blast site, and back again
to MMC - with the help of all the people I could get
hold of, that I was able to get confirmation in what
the state of my wife was.

My Dad and Uncle signaled me in from the ER of MMC. My
Uncle (who's a doctor) asked me to describe Leslie's
appearance to another group of doctors. I saw in the
eyes of one that the description made sense. Instead
of confirming it to me, they huddled together, then
brought me to a small examination room. It was only
through a digital camera that I was able to confirm
(and deny) that she was indeed gone.

I have so many regrets. I should have met her sooner.
I should have ran instead of a brisk walk. I should
have not chose to park where I did. I should have
braved the dust and went in the blast site. I should
have ...

Today's the 4th day. It is still terribly difficult to
breathe, let alone wake up realizing that your source
of strength, your best friend doesn't lie beside you
on your bed. That my deepest worry is when Amber
starts asking for her Mama.

I am glad that Amber's too young to understand the
loss and pain. In time I would like to tell her the
details of how her mother died, but more importantly I
would like to raise her as how her mother lived - a
loving person, strong willed, decisive, caring, and
nurturing. She has always cared for her family and
friends, and sacrfied her career for being a full time
mom and home maker.

As with all couples we had our ups and downs - none of
which I regret not going through. The sweet is never
as sweet without the sour. For almost 4 years of
marriage, we've finally hit our balance in life only
to be taken away in an instant. I have no regrets
about our marriage. She has loved me and Amber beyond
her capacity. I will always love her.

It is my first time to write to egroup as I've lurked
and watched emails being sent to and fro. All I want
now is that for each of the couples here is to cherish
each moment that we spend with our loved ones. Pretty
simple to say, very easy to take for granted.

Thank you all for the prayers. I would still like to
ask you to please include Leslie in them until her
40th day so that the path to God's kingdom is well lit
and she is no longer in the dark.

But since this is almost similar to the taggie i received the other day from Lovely Ruth, i decided to write the things i noticed about myself (change or quirkiness) during the period i am pregnant. They say pregnancy is different with every woman so let's see how different mine is.

8 Things About My Pregnancy

1. I do not have aversion to garlic or to anything smelly but i just do not want to cook. It's a struggle to fix a decent meal everyday hihi. But i forced myself because it would be a pity if we are going to have a baby girl and she would not want to have anything to do with a kitchen in the future. I hope this will change after i give birth because i always enjoyed cooking.

2. In the first three months, i really did not like to eat anything with cheese.

3. First trisem too, after meals were spent kneeling and throwing up in the bathroom. oh that was the hardest part.

4. First and second trisem, my dreams were all about guns and airplanes. It wasn't long before my ob-gyn declared we were having a baby boy.

5. I feel thirsty all the time. I bring water bottle with me everywhere i go.

6. Consequently, i know the nearest bathroom in every mall or park we visit. Ugh, i just need to pee every hour!

7. I can eat an egg every day.

8. Back pain. Ouch, ouch ouch. This is the first time i experienced such excruciating pain.

Aviation industry all over the world is all eyes on Singapore Airlines after the delivery of their Airbus A380 yesterday. Touted as the largest commercial airplane, the A380 can accommodate 500-800 passengers. Though i also read on the local newspaper yesterday that analysts are doubtful whether the A380 will ever make money, lets take a tour inside first and think about the profit later.
